Printing Revolution: From Object to Device

Flexible circuit boards are buzz-worthy devices trending in the ever progressive, ever advancing field of technical gadgetry.

2D printers press layers of ink on a surface in order to replicate 2D images. 3D printers form layers upon layers of engineered materials in specific and incremental patterns in order to replicate 3D objects. These objects are generally assembled with other parts in that they may work together to perform a function. Function: energy put into the production of a device or object that procures an ultimate result.

From the filing and storing of invaluable information to the shape of a child’s toy; to the smell of an Astronaut’s food to the sound heard by a person with a biologically engineered eardrum- functionality is formed using a 3D printer.

3D printed circuit boards are the encapsulation of both form and functionality. The circuit board must remain flat while the pattern is printed on a copper plate. Upon drying successfully, the flexible material is peeled off carefully to maintain space perimeters between circuits. 3D printing is highly favored by consumers’ customary choice options as well as their pocket books.
